From Idea to Process
Based on the ideas competition “Open Kunstareal”, the Kunstgarten will transform the existing open spaces of the Kunstareal into an urban park over the coming years. Building on and enhancing existing structures, it will create a new, interconnected green space in the heart of the city.
Through targeted measures such as increasing biodiversity with more trees and flower beds, providing seating throughout the year, and creating additional shaded areas, the Kunstgarten will become a versatile place for people to spend time, meet, and engage with their surroundings. In this way, the outdoor spaces of the Kunstareal will evolve into a cohesive, green urban landscape with a high quality of stay.
The Kunstgarten will contribute to improving the urban climate by providing shade and cooling on hot days, making the city more resilient to the impacts of climate change. At the same time, it will enhance the attractiveness of the neighbourhood and bring new vitality to the surroundings of cultural institutions, universities, cafés, restaurants, and local businesses. Above all, it will create a place that brings people together and becomes part of a shared urban life.
What exactly can we expect from the “Kunstgarten”?

The idea for the Kunstgarten was developed by the Paris-based landscape architecture studio Atelier Roberta and was unanimously recommended for implementation by the jury of the ideas competition.
