The AAP Archive Artist Publications in Munich has been documenting publications by international artists since 1980: Artists' books, zines, magazines, multiples, ephemera and much more. The archive's OPAC contains over 93,000 entries and thus visualises the diverse history and present of artistic forms of publication.
The focus is on independent, often experimental publications - self-published, in small editions and beyond the mainstream. Artists use the medium of the book as a form of expression, a space for discourse and a social tool.
The archive is a lively place for research, mediation and networking.
The AAP was founded by Hubert Kretschmer, who is continuously expanding and systematically cataloguing the collection. In addition to the physical collection of over 120,000 items, the database is made publicly accessible and offers a unique research source for artists' publications.
The archive regularly participates in exhibitions, fairs and publication projects. It maintains co-operations with museums, universities and international networks. With its work, the AAP makes a decisive contribution to the visibility and recognition of artists' publications as an art form in their own right.
